Nick Cannon & Mariah
So folks all over pop culture land are starting to "confirm" the marriage of Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon. Most find it an odd coupling, probably because the fan base wasn't prepared. This pair kept the relationship really hush hush, so we didn't have a lot of time to get used to the idea. And what an idea it is. The differences between the two are hard to miss with age, race and fame sitting front and center. Ok… so she's ethnically ambiguous, making the race thing not so big of a deal. And his movies have been way more popular than hers, so the fame issue has more balance than he's given credit for. But this age thing is really interesting. Not specifically because Mrs. Cannon is about a decade older than her husband; but because in a larger scope, these types of relationships are on the rise in the celebrity world.
Remembering back to Usher's announcement that he was getting married makes me laugh. A popular radio show here in Atlanta was inviting listeners to call in and talk about his decision to date and ultimately marry older. The majority of the callers were 20-something young ladies who found the concept "gross" and felt these "old ladies" needed to keep their paws off of "their men." Ha Haaaa!
Well, as a member of the 30-something set, I do my "30 is the new 20" baby T as I suggest that these lil ladies open their eyes. Love for the hot older chick is nothing new; it's just growing by leaps and bounds these days. Check out Star Jones and her new "friend" Dwayne Wade or Justin Timberlake's reported connections to Cameron Diaz and Janet Jackson. Vivica Fox shakes it for 50. Buffy the Body pushes 40 and Stacey Dash takes one of the hottest covers King Mag has ever produced. And only a few weeks after giving birth, Halle Berry was spotted out and about looking fabulous as usual with who; her much younger boyfriend.
You don't even have to be a celebrity. Young men far and wide seem to be checking out their former babysitters with more frequency than ever before. The reasoning changes from person to person. Possible motivations range from wanting a more grounded, self-sustaining partner to needing a 2nd mother. Regardless of what the drive is; it is happening and happening on a grand scale.
So, with ladies refusing to age these days and everybody kicking their generation down a notch, where does that leave the 80's babies? I can't say I know. With plastic surgery, Botox and the obvious discovery of the fountain of youth in the back yard of the Dash residence; it looks like you all will be in some serious competition for years to come. But keep your heads up girls, 30 is right around the corner.
